Has your congregation noticed an increase in requests for copies of baptism, marriage, and burial records? A recent change to Canada’s Citizenship Act has resulted in increased requests from south of the border. In April, the Presbyterian Church in Canada Archives surpassed the yearly average of certificate requests that we typically receive. If you find your congregation frequently contacted, here is what you can do:
- Ask the researcher if they have confirmed that the individual in question is listed as Presbyterian on census records
- Use your cell phone to take a photo of the entry, especially for fragile registers; or provide a letter (on letterhead) confirming the details of the event
- As record keepers you have the responsibility to share the information you hold; however, these are not top priority requests – do not let them consume your day
- Consider charging a fee for your time and resources
- If the PCC Archives hold copies of your records, direct the request to us
