Restoring irrigation canals in Afghanistan to improve crop yields, incomes and nutrition. Photo: CFGB.
PWS&D is working with Church World Service – Pakistan/Afghanistan (CWS-P/A) in Afghanistan to help rebuild irrigation infrastructures and provide livestock, vaccinations and fodder for families most affected by the food crisis. Families receive food assistance through a food-for-work project by assisting in the rehabilitation of kareezes, traditional underground rivers channeled to where people can easily access the water. Restocking sheep herds will help restore the livelihoods of the worst affected families, especially for widows. This work is done with the support of Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB).
PWS&D is also supporting a girls’ education program to bring girls between the ages of 5-12 back into the classroom for the chance to have a brighter future. Teachers are receiving training and damaged schools are being repaired and rebuilt. Children whose families who cannot afford to purchase textbooks are accessing their required books for free. The program works with families, the Ministry of Education and the larger community to ensure the sustainability of this program.
