Presbyterians in Action

Canada, Impact Stories

Inspired by God’s promise of abundant life, congregations from coast to coast are making a difference as they respond through praying, learning about needs around the world, and raising funds for the life-changing work the church is doing through PWS&D.

Kids Respond

On September 22, 2024, the children and youth of St. James’ J.A.M. group in Hanwell, NB, learned about Jesus’ words in Mark 9:33-37, a call to be kind and welcoming by doing good deeds for all. Focusing on serving others whose comfort and security have been impacted by disasters, the young people challenged the congregation to raise money to provide a winterized shelter for a family through PWS&D’s emergency relief programming. They were very pleased to exceed their fundraising goal, raising over six hundred dollars through “quarter jars”—more than enough to provide shelter for one family.

Raising Awareness

Through a colourful display and interactive activities, the congregation at St. Giles Church, Prince George, BC, learnt about the work the church is doing to alleviate suffering around the world during this year’s PWS&D Sunday service.

Many congregations across Canada celebrated PWS&D Sunday during their worship services on the first Sunday in February. At St. Giles Church, in Prince George, BC, a colourful display was set up to bring attention to the work the church is doing to alleviate suffering around the world. After showing a video which outlined the work of PWS&D, magnets were handed out during the children’s story time. The PWS&D Champion at this congregation, Don Burnard, was excited to share the video and other resources as “an excellent way to highlight the many efforts that our church is doing in partnership with other agencies.”

Reflecting on the importance of bringing attention to the church’s responses through PWS&D, Don encourages other congregations: “We were able to capture and highlight, in our service and our after-church coffee hour, information on what our national church is doing around the world. I hope that other churches are also able to do the same.”

Pancakes for PWS&D

This February, the church school at St. Andrew’s, Markham, ON, held their annual pancake fundraiser. Folks enjoyed a delicious meal, shared great fellowship, and raised money for the work of PWS&D. “It’s an incredibly important cause,” comments Champion Victoria Banfield. “We love sharing food at St. Andrew’s, and the added benefit of helping PWS&D is the maple syrup on the pancakes!”

Sixty people enjoyed pancakes, sausages and a breakfast potato dish, with yogurt berry parfaits for dessert. The event raised around $1,000 for PWS&D.
