Esmy’s Story of Entrepreneurship in Malawi

Impact Stories, Malawi

Written by Churches Action in Relief and Development (CARD), a PWS&D partner.

In the heart of Balaka District, Malawi, lives Esmy Edward, a 44-year-old single mother of five. Esmy’s journey is a testament to her own resilience, as well as the transformative power of community development initiatives.

The goats Esmy received through the project provide organic manure, which she uses to improve her farm’s productivity.

Not long ago, Esmy faced overwhelming challenges. “Life used to be tough,” she recalls. “Providing food and paying school fees for my two sons in secondary school felt like an impossible task.” However, her story took a hopeful turn when she became a participant in the Enhancing Climate Resilience for Improved Income and Food Security project through PWS&D partner CARD.

Through the project, Esmy learnt about financial management, and participated in a village savings group. She also received training on modern farming techniques, and obtained five goats, whose organic manure improves her farm’s productivity. Today, her herd of goats has grown to 10, thanks to her diligent care and the sustainable practices she adopted.

Esmy’s thriving farm ensures the family now has reliable access to food. Since beginning in the program, Esmy’s entrepreneurial spirit has also blossomed. For example, using concepts from the business training she received, she started a fish business, and ventured into tailoring. “Through my fish business alone, I make a profit of K300,000 [about $250 CAD],” she shares proudly.

This income has enabled her to cover the school fees for her two sons, ensuring they can continue their education without interruption. “I am grateful for the support I have received,” Esmy says. “Now, I can provide for my children, and I envision maintaining my house and seeing my sons finish school without difficulties.”

Esmy’s story highlights the impact of this project, which focuses on building climate resilience, improving income and ensuring food security for families in Balaka District. With continued support, participants like Esmy are transforming their lives and creating brighter futures for their communities.

This project receives support from Canadian Foodgrains Bank. PWS&D is a member of the Foodgrains Bank, a partnership of 15 churches and church agencies working together to end global hunger.
