Afghanistan is currently experiencing significant food insecurity due to a weak economy, massive reductions in humanitarian aid and environmental disasters such as flooding and drought.
In Bamyan province, the highest and coldest region of Afghanistan, the situation is especially critical. Winters often last up to six months and the region’s steep mountains and deep valleys make it highly exposed to natural disasters. These severe conditions have led to livestock deaths, damage to farmland, homes and infrastructure, and have limited access to vital resources such as food, clean water and health care.
These winter conditions often make travel difficult for many, especially women and children, to reach markets. The weather also affects roads, interrupting supply networks, making it difficult for communities to obtain food and hindering communities from carrying out essential agricultural activities.
Most families in Bamyan rely on their harvest reserves from the previous year to get through the winter. However, these stocks are often too limited or not sufficiently nutrient-rich.
To help ease some of the burden caused by this urgent situation, PWS&D, along with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and a local partner, is implementing the third phase of a cash assistance project that has been successful over the past two years. Cash-for-food assistance will support the resilience of 3,300 vulnerable households, reaching approximately 23,100 individuals in Bamyan. Cash transfers will be provided to families each month for five months, from December 2025 to April 2026
This assistance will help families purchase essential food items to carry them through the harsh times.
