In a small village in Nepal, 25 people came together to establish the Pipalchautari Self-Help Group (SHG). With support from PWS&D and International Nepal Fellowship (INF), PWS&D’s local partner, the group began working to strengthen their community and enhance safety from hazards like wildfires and landslides.
One day, a large fire broke out in the home of Darpana Darji, one of the SHG members. The fire, caused by a short circuit, destroyed her house and everything inside. She lost her sewing machines, and the family of four was left without money, food, clothes and essential documents. This tragic event underlined the importance of disaster preparedness.

However, before this incident occurred, INF had already trained the SHG members on how to prepare for such disasters. The group had started collecting grains during harvest time and saved money in an emergency fund. This way, they could help anyone in trouble. INF also collaborated with the local government to establish a Local Emergency Operation Centre (LEOC) to assist people promptly during disasters.
After the incident, the local government and LEOC provided Darpana with basic aid, including rice and blankets. The SHG held an emergency meeting and decided to give Darpana 20 kg of collected grain, a 30 kg bag of rice, 1 kg of salt, 1 litre of oil and 1 kg of lentils. This support helped Darpana and her family begin to rebuild.
“I’m very happy and thankful to all the group members for helping me in my hardest time. This support showed the power of unity. I’m also thankful to INF Nepal for teaching us how to be ready for disasters,” expressed Darpana
The Pipalchautari SHG serves as an excellent example for other communities – most have started similar activities.
