This deadly conflict continues to impact the everyday lives of civilians in Ukraine, as well as those forced to flee the country for safety elsewhere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The devastating consequences for so many have been met with incredible generosity from Presbyterians across the country. Since the start of the conflict, over $1 million has been contributed to PWS&amp;D\u2019s relief efforts. This has enabled responses both in Ukraine, but also for Ukrainian refugees who fled to neighbouring countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cultivating Hope<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prior to the war, farming hadn\u2019t just been Volodymyr\u2019s livelihood, it has been his life. But he and his family were forced to abandon everything when the conflict began. They ended up far from home, with no equipment or land. They sheltered in the village school, without any idea of what the future held. \u201cFor the first few months, I couldn\u2019t stop watching the news. I felt like I was losing my mind,\u201d he shares.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volodymyr realized he had to do something, so he returned to what he has always done \u2013 farming. This allowed him to cultivate three hectares of land where he planted potatoes, carrots, beets, squash, pumpkins, beans and onions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his neighbours\u2019 yards, many of whom had shared seeds and seedlings with him in exchange for a portion of the future harvest, he planted tomatoes, cucumbers and greens. Many of his neighbours are elderly and would have had to plant by hand \u2013a timely and labour-intensive practice. Because Volodymyr had equipment he could plow and plant their land in much less time, offering an invaluable contribution to the village.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Volodymyr yearns to return home, the work he is doing has provided him with both hope and healing. He\u2019s not just feeding his family or the others in the village who have been displaced, he\u2019s also helping strengthen the ties between locals and newcomers through his farming. Volodymyr is cultivating hope not just for himself, but for everyone around him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Three Years of Assistance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through ecumenical partners at ACT Alliance, PWS&amp;D was able to respond right from the outset of the conflict in 2022. Initial responses implemented by Hungarian Interchurch Aid (HIA) included ensuring access to food, water and sanitation, and shelter, as well as psychosocial support to help address mental health impacts. PWS&amp;D has also provided food assistance with members of Canadian Foodgrains Bank.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Longer-term responses to address food security and livelihood concerns have followed. Farmers like Volodymyr receive support from HIA to find purpose amidst the uncertainty. Additionally, through the Ars Longa Foundation, PWS&amp;D has supported 50 women-headed farm families with seeds, tools and fertilizer to enable them to support their families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PWS&amp;D continues to respond to the needs created by the ongoing conflict.
