Esmy\u2019s journey is a testament to her own resilience, as well as the transformative power of community development initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/pwsd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_5761-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6238\" style=\"width:362px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/pwsd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_5761-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/pwsd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_5761-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/pwsd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_5761-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/pwsd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_5761-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/pwsd\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/IMG_5761-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The goats Esmy received through the project provide organic manure, which she uses to improve her farm\u2019s productivity.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not long ago, Esmy faced overwhelming challenges. \u201cLife used to be tough,\u201d she recalls. \u201cProviding food and paying school fees for my two sons in secondary school felt like an impossible task.\u201d However, her story took a hopeful turn when she became a participant in the Enhancing Climate Resilience for Improved Income and Food Security project through PWS&amp;D partner CARD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through the project, Esmy learnt about financial management, and participated in a village savings group. She also received training on modern farming techniques, and obtained five goats, whose organic manure improves her farm\u2019s productivity. Today, her herd of goats has grown to 10, thanks to her diligent care and the sustainable practices she adopted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esmy\u2019s thriving farm ensures the family now has reliable access to food. Since beginning in the program, Esmy\u2019s entrepreneurial spirit has also blossomed. For example, using concepts from the business training she received, she started a fish business, and ventured into tailoring. \u201cThrough my fish business alone, I make a profit of K300,000 [about $250 CAD],\u201d she shares proudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This income has enabled her to cover the school fees for her two sons, ensuring they can continue their education without interruption.&nbsp;\u201cI am grateful for the support I have received,\u201d Esmy says. \u201cNow, I can provide for my children, and I envision maintaining my house and seeing my sons finish school without difficulties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Esmy\u2019s story highlights the impact of this project, which focuses on building climate resilience, improving income and ensuring food security for families in Balaka District.
