PWS&D’s integrated community health and economic initiatives are empowering vulnerable women, girls and communities to better access medical services as well as education and livelihood opportunities.
PWS&D has partnered with the Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) to support the Duncan Hospital in Raxual, Bihar—the poorest and most desperate state in India. Bordering Nepal, Raxual suffers pervasive health concerns often stemming from the region’s high crime rate, drug use and the sex trade. Hospital staff work tirelessly to treat patients with compassion and care.
In addition to inpatient care, CMAI’s outreach programs are empowering the rural poor, especially women and girls, by providing them with the tools they need to access proper health care and addressing issues of gender, empowerment and sexual and reproductive rights. Community task forces are established to better understand and advocate for government services such as health care and income generating opportunities—services that don’t often reach India’s most vulnerable and remote communities.
