Malawi

PWS&D is working to empower families living in vulnerable communities to access vital health care, earn sustainable incomes, escape cycles of hunger and embrace futures of hope and vitality.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. Hunger, climate change and health issues, including high rates of maternal and neonatal deaths, malaria and the pandemic spread of HIV and AIDS, continue to undermine development and efforts to escape poverty.

For over four decades PWS&D has been actively supporting development and emergency relief work in Malawi. Currently, PWS&D is working with the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian’s Blantyre and Livingstonia Synods to administer programs that work to address the root causes of poverty and hunger.

Through our work in Malawi, families receive conservation agriculture training, livestock and seeds to diversify their crops, improve their nutrition and increase their incomes. Programs also work to reduce malaria through community education and the distribution of bed nets.

Vulnerable women and their newborns are accessing the care they need to survive childbirth and embrace healthy futures through a PWS&D project that is building the skills of health workers, ensuring medical facilities have the correct medical tools and empowering women to take control of their reproductive health.

PWS&D helps provide home-based care, counselling, testing, medicine and health and hygiene education for people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS and helps prevent transmission of the disease from expecting mothers to their children. Training of church and community leaders helps spread a clear message of preventing HIV and reducing stigma. Orphans and vulnerable children participate in programs providing food, shelter and education. Through community-based child-care centres, children also receive much-needed emotional and psychosocial support.
