PWS&D is organizing a gathering of Presbyterian refugee sponsors from June 10-11, 2018. Follow Me: Our journey as refugee sponsors will take place at the church’s national offices in Toronto. (This event is immediately following the International Conference on Refugee Rights – more information below.)

At this gathering, we seek:

  1. To build the capacity of Presbyterian refugee sponsors through:
  • Sharing experiences of sponsorship
  • Exploring good practices of sponsorship
  • Practical training in sponsorship
  • Increasing knowledge of supports for sponsorship
  • Building connections among sponsors from different places
  1. To explore how Presbyterians’ sponsorship efforts can be even more successful
  2. To identify strategies on countering attitudes of racism and xenophobia that immigrants may encounter in their communities or in the media
  3. To identify issues for follow up

Registration is FREE. In order to register, please complete our registration form.

Deadline for registration: Monday, May 21

We are currently confirming the program for FOLLOW ME and will provide updates as news is available. We are thrilled that we will have resource people with us from the Reformed Church in Hungary and Amnesty International – Israel to talk about the challenges they face in welcoming newcomers in their countries. (For faster access to updates, join the closed PCC Refugee Sponsorship Facebook Group – search for PCC Refugee Sponsorship on Facebook.)

PWS&D has limited funds to support participation from outside of Southern Ontario. We cannot guarantee a subsidy to all participants, but will consider all requests and do our best to help.

Factors that will determine the amount allocated per participant include:

  • Distance from Toronto (and cost)
  • Expressed need
  • The number of requests we receive

Normally, we would provide only one subsidy per sponsoring group (congregation).

If you would like to apply for a travel subsidy, please provide a brief explanation of need in your registration form. The deadline for requests is April 30. Please note that the deadline to apply for travel subsidies is earlier than the registration deadline for the gathering to allow travel decisions and purchase of tickets.

Tip re help for long distance travel: Consider asking for donations of frequent flyer points from family / friends / members of your congregation.

We have reserved rooms at the Don Valley Hotel and Suites at the PCC’s special rate of $120+tx per room (single or double accommodation). The hotel is a 13-minute walk or two-minute drive from the venue.

Reservations at the hotel can be made through the national offices at sponsorship [at] presbyterian [dot] ca. Participants must settle their own bills at the hotel. Please be in touch by Monday, May 14 in order to access this reduced rate.

Please indicate whether you would like to share accommodation and with whom, or if you would like us to match you with a roommate.

Lunches on Sunday and Monday and dinner on Sunday evening will be provided on site. Coffee and muffins will be available on Monday morning. Breakfast can be purchased at the hotel or at the Tim Hortons between the hotel and the national offices.

International Refugee Rights Conference – June 7-9

We have planned FOLLOW ME on the heels of the International Refugee Rights Conference organized by the Canadian Council for Refugees, June 7-9. (Conference information is available here.) We hope this will facilitate FOLLOW ME participants attending both events. The International Refugee Rights Conference will be held at York University.

To register as a member of the PCC at the reduced rate of $105 ($150 if paid after May 7), please complete our attached registration form. (There is also a daily rate – for detailed rate information click here.) To benefit from this reduced rate, we will need to submit your registration for you via the national offices and will ask you to reimburse us by cheque.
