“He put before them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’” – Matthew 13:31-32

Jesus uses the parable of the mustard seed to describe how God can take a small thing and grow it into something big enough to protect and nourish living things—just as the mustard seed becomes the tree.

It is this parable that inspires the sermon written by The Rev. Dr. Sarah Travis. It may be hard to spot signs of God’s grace and abundance in some of the most vulnerable corners of the globe, but what we cannot see now may be made visible.

Change starts not with earth-shattering gestures, but with small seeds—PWS&D donors, partners and projects that are growing healthy, productive, safe and peaceful communities—one individual at a time.
