Presbyterian World Service & Development is pleased to have been informed that the first two Syrian families sponsored by Presbyterian groups will arrive on the evening of December 10th, 2015—International Human Rights Day. PWS&D administers the office sponsorship agreement with the Government of Canada on behalf of The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
Both families are being sponsored by groups in the Greater Toronto Area—by the Pickering Presbytery, in partnership with Life in Christ Ministry, and by St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (Humber Heights), together with St. Timothy Presbyterian Church and three Anglican parishes. The arrivals will be a moment of great joy—and relief—for the sponsors who have been preparing for many months for these arrivals.
It is anticipated that there will be more Presbyterian-sponsored families arriving before December 31, and more still before the end of February 2016. The Canadian government has announced that some 10,000 Syrian refugees will be arriving in Canada by year-end and another 15,000 early in the new year.
The Syria crisis has created a remarkable upswing in interest in sponsoring refugees to Canada—both Syrians and refugees from other parts of the world.
