St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Picton, Ontario, is honouring Indigenous art and culture in a big way.
The church will soon be home to the largest Indigenous mural on a church in Canada. The congregation received permission by award-winning Métis visual artist and author, Christi Belcourt, to reproduce her Art Gallery of Ontario commissioned piece Wisdom of the Universe on its north exterior wall.
Toronto muralist Jason Rouleau started work on Tuesday to reproduce the 37-foot by 36-foot mural, inspired by the beauty and intricacy of nature. While the Wisdom of the Universe mural is unfolding on an exterior wall, an art exhibit has also been set up inside the church featuring four Mohawk artists: Janice Brant, Rebecca Maracle, Doug Brant and Stephen Loney.
“We are taking small steps,” says Rev. Lynne Donovan, “towards listening to the voice and vision of our Mohawk neighbours. We have much to learn.”
