God of compassion, we come again to you with heavy hearts as we weep over the violence, the loss of life, the agony that has marked Spain.
We pray for those who had spouses, parents, children, friends killed in Barcelona and Cambrils, give them the comfort you alone can give. We bring before you those who were injured physically and emotionally, give them the healing your Holy Spirit offers to all who are hurting.
You are the God who wishes to gather all your children under your protection as a mother hen gathers her chicks. Gather the people of Barcelona and Cambrils, the people of Spain, all people under your wings of love and comfort.
Your Son, Jesus Christ, wept over the city of Jerusalem, saying, “If you, even you, had only recognized the things that make for peace!” He still weeps, weeps over a world that has not learned the things that make for peace. Come to our world by the gentle wind of your Holy Spirit and change humanity:
that those who believe injuring and killing are the ways to accomplish their goals will renounce the use of force;
that those who believe they are to exercise vengeance in the world will learn the difficult but gracious path of turning the other cheek;
and that all people would choose to be the makers of peace instead of being makers of violence.
May our hope and faith in you lead us away from fear and vengeance into the reign of peace and justice your Son, Jesus Christ, is bringing to the world.
In the name of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, we pray. Amen.
