PWS&D supports the people of Sudan through Canadian Foodgrains Bank and the ACT Alliance. In south-eastern Blue Nile State, PWS&D is currently supporting a food security project with CFGB to help 23,000 people combat prolonged hunger and malnutrition through school feedings, food-for-work activities and boosting agricultural practices.
In western Darfur, years of conflict and violence claimed more than 200,000 lives and displaced over 2.5 million people into large camps. PWS&D responded through CFGB and the ACT Alliance-Caritas network – in one of the largest non-government responses in Darfur – to send lifesaving food shipments, teach improved hygiene and nutrition practices, construct wells and latrines, provide school support, train farmers in new agricultural techniques and promote peacebuilding.

It is a tumultuous time for the African country of Sudan. With the results of the recent referendum among those in Southern Sudan and internationally showing an overwhelming majority opting to split the country in two, big changes are in store for Sudan’s population. There are many questions to be dealt with, including where the border between north and south will be located, how it will be guarded, how the new government will be formed, will there be a new currency, and many wonder if the south is prepared for independence.
PWS&D is currently supporting a food security project in Sudan’s south-eastern Blue Nile State in partnership with Canadian Foodgrains Bank. The project is working with approximately 23,000 people to deal with prolonged hunger and malnutrition through school feedings of 8,000 students, food-for-work activities and boosting agricultural practices.
PWS&D is also following the situation in Sudan closely. PWS&D’s Africa program coordinator recently participated in a Sudan Referendum Monitoring debrief with John Lewis, International Human Rights coordinator for KAIROS on February 11. John was part of the team monitoring the voting in Sudan. In addition, the KAIROS Africa Partnerships Coordinator was a domestic observer in Canada for Ontario voters. You can read more about the referendum situation on John’s blog.
