Balaka Food Response in Malawi

Over the past year, families in Balaka, Malawi faced prolonged drought and chronic food shortages. PWS&D is working through Canadian Foodgrains Bank to provide food, agricultural training and cassava clippings for 5,000 people in Balaka, helping them to restart their farms.

Hungary “Red Mud” Disaster

Communities around Ajka were inundated with a flood of toxic red sludge from a nearby alumina plant in October 2010. PWS&D is supporting Hungarian Reformed Church Aid to provide 200 displaced families with food, supplies and shelter.

Hurricane Igor in Canada

Hurricane Igor ripped across eastern Newfoundland in September 2010, causing widespread flooding, damage to personal property, and isolating communities as roads were washed away. PWS&D is accepting donations, responding on behalf of The Presbyterian Church in Canada.

Tropical Storm Agatha in Central America

Tropical Storm Agatha dumped more than 1 metre of rainfall in parts of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador in May 2010, causing a giant sinkhole to open in Guatemala City. PWS&D is responding through the ACT Alliance to provide food, emergency supplies, set up temporary shelters, clear debris and rebuild livelihoods.

China Earthquake

A 7.1 magnitude earthquake devastated China’s Qinghai Province in April 2010. PWS&D is working with the ACT Alliance to assess the full extent of the needs of those most affected.

Chile Earthquake

One of the most powerful earthquakes in Latin America in the last 50 years hit Chile in March 2010. PWS&D is providing food, emergency supplies, shelter and livelihood recovery through the ACT Alliance.

Taiwan Typhoon Relief

Typhoon Morakot slammed into Taiwan in August 2009, causing loss of life, extensive flooding. PWS&D is working with the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan to provide food, emergency relief, education and emotional support.
