Pakistan was left reeling after heavy rains and devastating flooding in mid-August destroyed farmland, vital infrastructure, and left hundreds of thousands displaced or homeless. Without adequate shelter, many families in the hard-hit Sindh province were unsure how they would endure the cold winter months.
With their home completely flooded, Dhany, a sixty-eight year old widow, and her youngest son, Rtan, found shelter in a primary school for three months. Hungry, they returned home only to find that all of their belongings had been washed away, including beds and utensils, and their four-bedroom house badly damaged.
“Now we are living under the open sky and face problems due to winter. At night we are cold,” says Dhany.
In response to the critical needs for shelter in Sindh, PWS&D and our partner provided 776 vulnerable, flood affected families with winterized shelter kits, each containing a tent, plastic sheet and four blankets.
“We are now saved from the harsh winter,” declares Dhany with gratitude after receiving her shelter kit.
Distributed from December until February, these kits were essential in keeping families warm and secure throughout the winter months. Now with spring approaching, families in the Sindh province of Pakistan have braved the worst of the cold winter months and are beginning to recover from tremendous loss and rebuild, thanks to the support of Presbyterians in Canada.
When disasters strike, help ensure assistance is ready. Please give today.
