Pakistan Flood Update: On the Verge of Tragedy

As millions of flood-affected people in Pakistan’s southern province of Sindh remain without shelter, adequate food supplies, health care and clean drinking water, the United Nations is warning that relief items will run out unless the international community increases its emergency response. If more funding is not received within the next month, distributions of food supplies, clean drinking water and emergency shelter are at risk of stopping.

“The unment needs in Sindh are a tragedy waiting to happen,” says Allan Calma, Church World Service-Pakistan/Afghanistan’s Deputy Director for Disaster Management. “The high prevalence of poverty in Sindh exacerbates the challenges of overcoming this disaster. The destruction of agricultural crops and loss of livelihoods means these communities have little or no resources with which to restart their lives.”

PWS&D is Responding

PWS&D is responding to the plight of affected families by working in partnership with Canadian Foodgrains Bank and local partner Church World Service-Pakistan/Afghanistan. The current response is distributing 577 metric tons of food, resulting in a two-month food ration for 2,000 families in Mirpurkhas and Umerkot districts. With your help, we also hope to be able to provide other needed support such as tents, health services and emergency supplies.
