News Brief: Nigeria

Presbyterian World Service & Development, representing The Presbyterian Church in Canada as a member of the ACT Alliance is concerned by the conflict unfolding in the northern part of Nigeria. Bombings of churches and killings occurring over the past two months are being cast as religious conflict, intensifying existing pressures between Christians and Muslims in the country.

The Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations recently released a statement endorsed by religious leaders of both faiths condemning the attacks and continued conflict:

“That Nigeria being the most populous nation in Africa, and seen as one of the leading powers in the continent, we recognize that a peaceful Nigeria would create a peaceful environment in Africa. Therefore we see a divided and turbulent Nigeria has having a negative impact on the continent and not only in West Africa.

We hereby agree to continue to remain in solidarity with each other in the promotion of Justice, Peace, and Reconciliation. We further would like to assure the people and government of Nigeria that as Religious Leaders we commit ourselves to continuously pray for the peace and unity that country even as we stand by for any assistance that may be required from us.”

We ask that you pray for the establishment of peace and unity in Nigeria and remember those affected by the recent attacks.
