For the past two years, Pakistan has endured a battering of heavy rains and severe flooding that has affected 20 million people, destroyed crops, and left millions unable to access food. Farmers face many challenges as they struggle to reclaim their livelihoods. Acres of once productive farmland have lost valuable topsoil and the prices of seeds, tools and fertilizers have skyrocketed. In a country already struggling with poverty and food insecurity, the consequences are devastating.
Mohammad’s Story
Like thousands of others, when the flooding began, Mohammad and his family fled to higher ground. Days later when they returned home, it was difficult for the family to cope with the extent of their loss. On his eight acres of land, they once grew cotton, chilies, wheat, mustard and other vegetables, but all that is gone now. He also lost stored seeds for the upcoming planting season, his three goats and one buffalo, plus a range of valuable household supplies.
“It is difficult to face the situation,” Mohammad said. “It will be about four or five months until we can have anything that the land can produce.”
The journey back to food security for the family will be a long and difficult one, but Mohammad is determined to build back his farm.
