PWS&D is working with local partners in Nicaragua to increase the productivity of farmers’ land, improve mother and child health, support people living with HIV and AIDS and provide safe shelter for young girls escaping abuse, violence and exploitation.

Small-scale farmers in rural areas of Nicaragua are learning sustainable, organic agricultural techniques to help them increase their yields and improve diets and incomes. Malnutrition and anemia in the region has significantly decreased due to these initiatives run in partnership with Soynica and the Council of Protestant Churches in Nicaragua (CEPAD). Farmers are also learning marketing skills to market their products efficiently.

In the capital city of Managua, PWS&D is helping strengthen a network of community nutrition and health educators who work with women’s groups to improve nutrition. Mothers receive nutritional tips from the educators and families learn how to have healthy diets despite limited financial resources.

People living with HIV and AIDS are accessing emotional support and material assistance to meet their daily needs through PWS&D’s partnership with the Nimehuatzin Foundation. The Foundation runs courses on human rights and HIV, and works on gender, ethics, sustainable development and poverty reduction strategies.

Children who have been exposed to abuse, violence and exploitation in their homes or in Managua’s busy markets find safety and shelter through PWS&D’s partnership with the Institute for Human Promotion (INPRHU). This program seeks to reintegrate children into family life and Nicaragua’s formal school system. Youth build their self-esteem through social, cultural, sporting and technical activities, and learn about their rights and responsibilities. Through individual and group counselling at the Casa de las Ninas shelter, young girls learn to deal with the trauma of sexual abuse and restore their self-confidence and dignity. With the assistance of PWS&D, INPRHU is giving children who have been forced into difficult situations the chance to be children again.
