PWS&D is working with COCAMO (Cooperation Canada-Mozambique)’s Caixa das Mulheres de Nampula to support community development through micro-enterprise initiatives in the northern provinces of the country by using a successful model of grassroots savings and credit unions for low-income women. Through this program, women in Mozambique who would normally be denied by traditional financial institutions now access credit, savings and banking services at the Caixa to start small businesses and save for the future. Run by women, for women, the Caixa model has been recognized as one of the most promising micro-finance institutions in Mozambique. The Caixa is one of the few financial institutions in the country that is member owned and driven, and enjoys a loan repayment rate of more than 98%. Because of traditional attitudes toward women in northern Mozambique, the success of the Caixa is a particularly remarkable story. PWS&D is also supporting COCAMO’s efforts to promote HIV and AIDS prevention programs and reduce discrimination against those living with AIDS through a multimedia campaign.
