Shirley and Herb’s Great Central American Adventure

In my last blog post, I introduced you to Peter McLean and “Peter’s Great Canadian Cycling Adventure. “ Well, now my wife Shirley and I are embarking on our own adventure – not to Canada but to Nicaragua and Guatemala. Each moderator makes o international trip during his/her moderatorial year to visit our church’s mission partners and to return to Canada with stories to tell and a broader understanding of the international mission work of the church. Since it had been several years since a PCC moderator had visited Central America and since I am celiac (with the accompanying dietary restrictions), it was recommended that my international trip take me to Central America. The diet in Central American countries uses a lot of beans and corn (no gluten) rather than wheat (high in gluten), which is prevalent in the North American diet; thus, an international trip to Central America seemed like a good choice. Since Shirley and I have never been to Central America, it also seemed like an exciting new adventure for the two of us.

Ken Kim, Director of PWS&D and former long-term missionary in the region, is going to be our tour guide for the trip. Who could ask for a better tour guide? Ken is fluent in Spanish and he is personally familiar with the region and with all our mission partners. Barb Summers, PWS&D Communication’s Director, is also going to be joining us for most of the trip. She will be getting firsthand experience of the projects being supported by PWS&D, and she will also be taking lots of photos of the moderator’s trip (she’s also lots of fun).

Shirley and I are presently sitting in the Buffalo Airport waiting for our flight to Managua, Nicaragua (with a two hour layover in Atlanta). We’re going to meet Barb in the Atlanta airport, and the three of us will be taking the rest of the flight to Managua together. Ken, who flew down to Nicaragua on Sunday, is going to meet us at the airport in Managua this evening.

Stay tuned to this website during our trip. I will be giving regular updates on some of the highlights of our journey. So… let the adventure begin!
