Margaret Near – Obituary

Margaret Near died peacefully on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Allendale Nursing Home in Milton. Margaret graduated from the Presbyterian Missionary and Deaconess Training School (which in 1962 became Ewart College). She graduated in 1952 and was designated to the Order of Diaconal Ministries on April 25, 1952 by the Presbytery of Guelph. After serving in Western Canada for two years, she returned to Toronto to serve Chinese Presbyterian Church from 1954 – 1972. During a couple of furloughs, she studied Chinese language in China and Hong Kong. She served on the PMDTS/Ewart College Alumni Association as secretary/treasurer for many years. She was also active in the Order of Diaconal Ministries and attended the World Federation of Diaconia in Germany in the 1990s. She traveled extensively, read widely, and kept her Bible close at hand always. In recent years, she was active in the congregation at Calvin until she moved to Milton to be closer to family. Margaret’s service to the church has wide ripple effects and her faith was an inspiration and encouragement to many.

Marg is survived by her sister Audrey Bester (Near) and her husband Jim and many nieces and nephews.

A service of Thanksgiving for the Life and Witness of Margaret Near will take place on Saturday, October 28 at 2:30 p.m. at Calvin Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow.
