Rev. Karen Horst
Moderator, 141st General Assembly
Presbyterian Church in Canada

Dear Rev. Horst:

I am writing in response to your correspondence of January 13, 2016, addressed to the Honourable Stéphane Dion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, regarding the detention of the Reverend Hyeon Soo Lim, in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

The Government of Canada is concerned for Mr. Lim’s rights and well-being. Canada has long warned against all travel to North Korea, as the ability of Canadian officials to provide consular assistance in that country is extremely limited. Nevertheless, we have been fully engaged on this case since it began.

Although the Privacy Act limits the information I can provide you, please be assured that Canadian consular officials are providing assistance to Mr. Lim and his family.

Sincerely,
Victoria Fuller
Director, Consular Case Management
Consular Operations Bureau

Dear Minister Dion,

I am writing to you on behalf of The Presbyterian Church in Canada concerning the Rev. Hyeon Soo Lim who has been sentenced to life in a prison labour camp by North Korea’s Supreme Court.

Thank you for the efforts by the Government of Canada to secure Mr. Lim’s release. It is our hope and prayer that the Government of Canada’s on-going efforts will bear fruit so that Mr. Lim can be safely returned to his family and his congregation in Canada. I look forward to hearing from you.
